North Yorkshire Open Studios

I am just about to go into the studio and open ready for today’s event. I will also be open on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June 2012 and open during the week 11th to 14th June by appointment. During Open Studios I will be demonstrating a variety of techniques during the day, starting at 11am – including making unique silver jewellery using art clay silver.

The road from Egton to Glaisdale is going to be closed near Beggars Bridge for three weeks during the period of Open Studios. To get to Glaisdale you will have to approach via Lealholm or Rosedale. This affects anyone intending to visit – but it will be worth the trip to see my wonderful new studio, watch demos and buy something from my new ranges of work.

Yesterday I did a few demonstrations of lamp work bead making, creating some tiny bumpy beads for a necklace I have planned. Today I will be doing a bit of work on a large pendant using art clay silver. I love working in and teaching metal clay. It is great for creating interesting three dimensional pieces with unique textures. I am currently working on is a little architectural piece, part of my new range of work inspired by some of the many buildings I visited and studied while I taught history of architecture and design (a few years ago now). For the past few years I have created work inspired mainly by my local environment – plants and flowers and the patterns of the landscape and it has taken me a while to come around to the idea of using my architectural studies and love of historical places as a theme for work.

Yesterday was lovely, a nice mix of regular visitors and new faces and I am hoping for more visitors again today.

Making beads in silver clay

I have done a little more work on the hollow metal clay beads I began last week. These are charm style bracelet beads made in sections using art clay silver, dried and then assembled. To ensure a good finish I make sure the bead is really smooth before I begin to apply the lines or pattern. The decorative lines are then applied using syringe type art clay silver.

20120307-190639.jpg
I put a pair of small tweezers right through the hole and (as long as I remember not to grip the handles) this keeps the bead quite secure while I am applying the syringe lines. I do them in stages, drying each line as I go. This helps to prevent lines from getting squashed or blurred. Once it is thoroughly dry I go back around it very carefully adding a little paste into any gaps between the bead and applied line and smoothing where necessary.

I teach this as part of my Making beads in silver clay class. Please contact Lynne if you would like to learn this technique or have a look on my website for other classes.

Silver clay beads

I have had a lovely one-to-one class today in my new workshop. We spent the day making large holed beads in art clay silver using a wide variety of different techniques to construct them. We began the day by making a snake of clay and winding it around to make a spiral snake bead before going on to make a textured formed by rolling out clay slabs. Then we went on to construct more complex hollow beads in sections and Miriam, my student, then syringed pattern onto hers. We also made little flower beads using a mould to make the flowers, drying them and then joining them together before reinforcing the seams and rounding off the inside of the bead. Miriam made seven different beads in all and went away proudly wearing her new bracelet, will the addition of a few of my lamp worked glass beads to finish it. I realise I am out of practice as I have forgotten to take any photos during the day so here is my unfinished flower bead, fresh from the kiln (still on the kiln shelf)

Silver clay beads

Today I have begun a large hollow constructed bead. This is one of the workshops I will be teaching here in my studio in Yorkshire in 2012. It is constructed using art clay silver and here it is in a fairly raw state, drying on my hotplate. I still have a lot of work to do on it but will post photographs as I proceed. The reason I have designed it in this “bobbin” style is so that I can add enamel and the enamel surface will be protected by the protruding edges.

Bracelet arrives home

I made this bracelet last winter for the Art Clay Accessories Contest in Japan. It was displayed in the exhibition in Tokyo along with very beautiful work by artists in art clay silver from across the world. I was thrilled to see that it had been exhibited and also included in the beautiful exhibition catalogue.

It is made using lamp work glass beads, made by me using Ivory effetre glass. This glass reacts with silver and darkens where it is contact during the firing process. I used a variety of art clay products and techniques.

I can teach the techniques I used to make this bracelet, just send me a message using the comments if you would like more details or by the contacts form at details
